Huntercombe Golf Course Nuffield

Huntercombe Golf Club

Originally a heathland course, the fairways are now mostly bounded by mature trees and carefully managed woodland, with bluebells an added peril in the Spring. There is still plenty of gorse, only 13 sand bunkers and over 100 grass pots are cunningly positioned to make golfers of all levels of ability think carefully about their strategy.
The Club prides itself on its immaculate fairways, with their “immemorial turf” always a delight to play on, and on its challenging greens. These are all of the finest quality, running fast and true; the varied contouring of the greens keeps all golfers on their toes and from start to finish offer a fine test of putting skill and nerve.

Aldworth Giants

St Mary's Church - Aldworth

St Mary's Church next to the centuries-old yew tree can always boast of a constant congregation, for within lie the last representatives of the de la Beche family. They seem to fill the church and lie in stately stone splendour either along the aisles under richly carved canopies, or upon tombs in the nave. There are nine of these effigies, so tall in scale as to be known as the "Aldworth Giants", which are surely unique in the country in that they represent so many of an ancient family in so small a parish.

Basildon Park

Basildon Park - Basildon

An 18th-century house, and a 1950s home. This Georgian mansion is surrounded by parkland and was lovingly rescued by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the mid 1950s. The house you see today is a re-creation and restoration of the 18th-century mansion. They restored the elegant interior and scoured the country salvaging 18th-century architectural fixtures and fittings. Lord and Lady Iliffe filled their comfortable new home with fine paintings, fabrics and furniture, which can still be enjoyed by you today.

mapledurham watermill

Mapledurham Watermill

Fifteenth century Watermill.
In the framework of the present mill the fifteenth century mill can be clearly seen, its walls, timbers and roof trusses form the centre of the building. At this time the wheel operated two pairs of stones. Mapledurham Gurney, Chawsey and Purley relied entirely on the mill. Records show that Sir Thomas de Hurskaal (Lord of Purley) provided chalk to make roads and bridges so his corn could cross the river to the mill.
